New Leash on Life Chicago Profile #2: Abbe
Every once in a while, New Leash on Life Chicago (Chicago, Illinois 60618) comes across a new mom at Animal Care and Control (ACC).
July 1, 2009
These dogs are especially hard to adopt out from ACC because they bear the signs of recent motherhood: they've obviously been nursing their puppies and can take a while to snap back, their energy levels are lower than usual, and they get overlooked in favor of their adorable puppies. This is where New Leash on Life Chicago comes in - its staff and volunteers pride themselves in taking the mamas because they are just as deserving of a normal life as any other dog.
New Leash on Life Chicago met Abbe at ACC a few months ago. While she was only about 10 months old at the time and still a baby herself, she came into ACC very pregnant and soon had a litter of puppies.
Another large and well-known rescue in Chicago swooped in and took her puppies ... but they left Abbe in the pound to fend for herself. That's where NLOL came in. Abbe has been happily living with two foster pit bulls and three foster feline pals. Her confidence has improved, she has been through NLOL's School for Dogs, she is very smart, affectionate with her humans, and tolerant of most dogs.
Sadly, Abbe's foster mom is moving for graduate school in August, so Abbe needs a new foster or forever home. NLOL is desperately looking for an experienced dog owner without children to take Abbe in, whether on a foster or foster-to-adopt basis. While Abbe has made great improvements while with NLOL, she still has some issues and quirks that NLOL continues to work on, and would love her foster or forever home to be equally as dedicated to helping her blossom. Please contact Elisabeth (elisabeth@nlol.org) if you or someone you know is interested!
